What is a hybrid seed?

A hybrid seed is produced by cross-pollinated plants, which are made by crossing two different varieties of parents to produce a unique offspring: a hybrid. Hybrids are bred to improve the characteristics of the resulting plants, such as better yield, improved color, greater uniformity, and disease resistance, but often less nutrition. This means that most hybrid varieties will not reproduce, requiring the purchase of new seeds each year, eliminating your ability to become more self-sufficient and giving more control to big corporations.

What is a Non-Hybrid Seed?

A non-hybrid seed is produced by natural means such as bees, wind, birds, etc. The resulting plant will look like the parents and produce seeds that will grow true to the variety. Seeds from the plant may be collected, stored and replanted year after year without having to buy new seeds each year.

What is a GMO Seed?

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. These seeds have genetic materials that have been altered by using genetic engineering techniques to improve resistance to herbicides or pesticides, have longer shelf life, grow resistant to diseases, etc. There is much controversy surrounding the use of GMO seeds for reasons of human and environmental safety, effects on world food supply, and the impact they have on farms and farmers.
